WASHINGTON (AP) —
The head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation says the nation’s banking system is sound and Americans’ deposits are “overwhelmingly” safe.
Sheila Bair, the FDIC chairman, says people worried about their money should not be overly concerned because the FDIC is their safety net. She made her comments on CBS’ “The Early Show.” The FDIC insures bank deposits of up to $100,000 and up to $250,000 for funds in retirement accounts such as an IRA

Dental hygiene students at John A. Logan College are giving a number of southern Illinois homeless persons something to smile about.
“If it wasn’t for John A. Logan College, our residents would not have any dental care at all,” said Mike Davis, director of the Lighthouse (homeless) Shelter in Marion.

The four Miss Southern Illinois Pageants will again be taking the stage on Saturday, August 9, at Marion Cultural Civic Center. As always, there are four divisions which can be entered—Little Miss (4-8), Pre-Teen Miss (9-12), Teen Miss (13-17) not a high school senior, and MISS SOUTHERN ILLINOIS PAGEANT, ages 17- 23, which is a Miss America Preliminary.
