WASHINGTON (AP) —
The head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation says the nation’s banking system is sound and Americans’ deposits are “overwhelmingly” safe. Sheila Bair, the FDIC chairman, says people worried about their money should not be overly concerned because the FDIC is their safety net. She made her comments on CBS’ “The Early Show.” The FDIC insures bank deposits of up to $100,000 and up to $250,000 for funds in retirement accounts such as an IRA

Dental hygiene students at John A. Logan College are giving a number of southern Illinois homeless persons something to smile about. “If it wasn’t for John A. Associated Press - July 14, 2008 11:54 AM ETAURORA, Ill. (AP) - It will come as no surprise to anyone that gas prices are up again in Illinois. AAA Chicago says the cost of regular unleaded gasoline in the state jumped 9 cents in the past month, driving the average cost of a gallon to $4.21 this month. Motorists are paying about 93 cents more a gallon than they were last year.
